Subject overview

Studying Design and Technology includes the use of a broad range of knowledge, skills, and understanding, and prompts engagement in a wide variety of activities. Pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. Through evaluation of past and present Design and Technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.

The department is staffed by 4 specialist teachers who deliver Design and Technology from KS3 to KS5. The department has a range of specialist teaching rooms to deliver Food Technology, Graphics, Resistant Materials, Textiles and Construction.

Key Stage 3 overview

In Year 7 and 8 learning is focused on all areas of Design and Technology. Pupils spend a term in each area learning about the importance of good design as well as developing practical skills. They work to a brief, communicating their own design ideas in order to develop and make a product.

Key Stage 4 overview

We offer three courses at KS4. GCSE Design & Technology, BTEC Construction, and Level 1/2 Hospitality & Catering.

GCSE Design & Technology

The new GCSE places greater emphasis on understanding and applying iterative design processes. Students will use their creativity and imagination to design and make prototypes that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others' needs, wants and values. Students can study Textiles, Resistant materials and Graphics within this specification. The course is split into 50% coursework and 50% exam.

Level 1 / 2 Hospitality & Catering

This new and exciting course has been introduced to our students to not only help them understand technical food processes but to understand the on growing hospitality and catering industry. Students will learn all about health and safety procedures, risk assessments and service. The course is split into 70% coursework and 30% exam.

BTEC Construction

This course covers both the theory and practical elements of the built environment. There are 4 units each looking at different aspects of Construction, from Building Technology and Building Design to the application of Science and Maths in Construction. Students will also learn about practical Joinery and Carpentry methods and produce a project based around the the skills associated with this trade. Three units of work are assessed in School in project form and the remaining unit is assessed by way of an exam which is externally marked. All in all, a great subject to choose for those students wishing to go down either a practical trade or academic technical route in either Construction or any aspect of the Built Environment.

Key Stage 5 overview

A-Level Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Students can study either Product Design or Textiles & Fashion. The course encourages learners to use creativity and imagination when applying iterative design processes to develop and modify designs, and to design and make prototypes that solve real world problems, considering their own and others' needs, wants, aspirations and values.

The specification enables learners to identify market needs and opportunities for new products, initiate and develop design solutions, and make and test prototypes. Learners should acquire subject knowledge in design and technology, including how a product can be developed through the stages of prototyping, realisation and commercial manufacture.
