Subject overview

The Faculty is staffed by 8 specialist teachers who deliver Physical Education and Performing Arts from KS3 to KS5. The Faculty is fully equipped with a full range of state of the art indoor and outdoor facilities. Over a number of years, the Faculty has consistently achieved fantastic results in all examined courses being placed in the top 5% nationally for students attaining A*-C grades in 2017.

Opportunities to excel, participate and develop a passion for learning underpin everything we do. All students have the opportunity to participate and thrive in a wide range of activities that extend beyond the confines of the classroom via all-encompassing enrichment programs.

Not are d other they provided opportunities to develop knowledge, application and understanding in sports and performance but al so students help build character and self-confidence while embedding values such as fairness and respect. Learning is facilitated by using a spiral approach to planning where students are given regular opportunities to either consolidate or extend their learning ensuring that progress is always made within an activity.

Key Stage 3 overview

Physical Education- In years 7 and 8 we deliver a curriculum that allow students equal and enriched access to learning the necessary skills required to perform across a full range of sporting activities. Rules, tactics and strategies are continually introduced when appropriate to enable that all students make rapid progress and gain a clear understanding of the concepts that govern each activity covered.

Key Stage 4 overview

Across Years 9, 10 and 11 each student experiences a more in-depth approach to learning. In this phase students will develop their competency and understanding for the skills associated across team and individual activity areas applying them to more demanding situations.

Our students also have opportunities to develop their leadership skill via the Introductory Sports Leadership programme we have at Thorp Academy. This allows students to take an active role working local primary feeder school, clubs and National sports initiatives.

In addition to our core entitlement students can choose to follow either a BTEC Sport or GCSE PE qualification. By following these programmes of study a student will gain a much deeper insight and understanding of how tactics, physiological socio-cultural and psychological concept and issues can impact and improve performance in sport.

Key Stage 5 overview

In years 12 and 13 we provide learning programmes in both BTEC Level 3 and A Level that allow for perfect transition to all sports related University courses.

Duke of Edinburgh and Level 3 Sports Leaders courses are also an option for students who wish to follow a nationally recognised qualification as an enrichment option.
