Subject overview

The department is staffed by 1 specialist teacher who delivers Music from KS3 to KS4. The Music classrooms are fully equipped with its own IT equipment, recording studio, 2 grand pianos and 6 practise rooms which can be used throughout the school day. Music is also supported by 6 peripatetic teachers who deliver instrumental lessons in piano, drums, guitar, flute, saxophone, violin and trumpet to name a few. Extra-curricular include a steel pans club along with participation in musicals and shows hosted by both the music and drama departments. Practice times are usually held after school throughout the week.

Key Stage 3 overview

The Music course for KS3 teaches pupils how to compose, perform and listen to music in various styles. In year 7, pupils are taught how to play the keyboard and the recorder as well as taught how to read music both in pitch and rhythm. In year 8, pupils are taught characteristics from various genres which include Samba and Blues Music as well as performing to a higher level on the keyboard.

Key Stage 4 overview

GCSE Music is taught at KS4 to the AQA GCSE Music specification. It provides an in-depth study of musical composition, performance, listening and appraising. Pupils are given to opportunity to explore musical areas that interest them and complete 2 compositions, 2 performances and 2 set works which link to their listening key skills. To succeed in this subject, pupils must be committed to practicing a chosen instrument on a daily basis.

Over a number of years the Music department has achieved fantastic results with 85% of students attaining A*-C grades in 2017.
