Subject overview

The department is staffed by two experienced specialist staff who deliver the subject in Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5.

Key stage 4 students complete the OCR Cambridge Nationals at Level 2 in Health and Social Care

Key Stage 5 students complete the OCR Cambridge Technicals at Level 3 in Health and Social Care as an Extended Certificate, Diploma or Extended Diploma.

Courses at both Key Stage 4 and 5 are a combination of coursework and external examination and have been successful each year supporting student progression to the next stage of their learning journey.

Key Stage 4 overview

The course is made up of 4 units of work: 3 units are internally assessed coursework and 1 unit is an externally assessed examination.

The unit topics are as follows:

Essential values of care for use with individuals in care settings(RO21 External exam)

Communicating and working with individuals in health, social care and early years settings

(RO22 Internal assessment)

Understanding life stages

(RO25 Internal assessment)

Understanding the development and protection of young children in an early years setting

(RO28 Internal assessment)

Key Stage 5 overview

Option 1 - Level 3 Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care

Option 2 - Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Health and Social Care

Option 3 - Level 3 Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care

Placement is required as part of the programme one morning or afternoon per week.

Learners gain a good theoretical understanding of Health , Social Care and Early Years and study a variety of specialist units depending on which option the choose.
