Subject overview

The drama department is staffed by a specialist teacher who delivers Drama from KS4 to KS5. The students study a wide range of published play texts, theatrical practitioners and styles as well as having the opportunity to devise their own original pieces of theatre. There are regular opportunities to take part in school productions and also watch professional productions at local theatres.

Lessons take place in a fully equipped drama studio and, when performing publicly, the students have a fantastic theatre space that holds an audience of over 200.

Key Stage 4 overview

We deliver the new Edexcel GCSE Drama 9-1 specification at KS4. This course encourages and understand of fundamental principles and concepts of Drama, including performance skills, design skills, directorial skills and the theory behind the subject. The course also requires students to learn skills to allow them to analyse and evaluate live theatre. Students will develop a wide range of transferable skills during this course including creativity and innovation, teamwork and negotiation, as well as analytical and critical thinking skills.

Key Stage 5 overview

A Level Drama and Theatre follows the Edexcel specification and focuses on devising, interpreting play texts for performance and written analysis of live productions and set texts. Students will encounter a more advanced and mature range of practitioners and playwrights, tackle a more complex style of performance as well as experiencing both mainstream and fringe professional productions. The course builds upon the skills developed at GCSE and prepares students for either the next step in their studies or the work place.
