Derwentside College Apprenticeship Visit

On Thursday 22nd February, two teams of Thorp Academy mentoring students were given the chance to attend Derwentside College for an Apprenticeship taster day. We left Thorp at 9am and started the day with a meeting in the conference room with Justine the student co-ordinator where the students were divided up into their two teams and taken to different departments. The girls spent the morning in the beauty therapy salons, learning how to apply hand heat treatments. The boys group spent the morning in the restaurant kitchen making scones and pizzas. After a lovely lunch provided by the College, the groups swapped and the boys were taken to construction where they used the woodwork machinery and the girls had their turn in the restaurant.

For the last hour before we left, the whole group were taken to the Electrical Engineering department where they wired together working pairs of speakers using the department equipment and talking to an Apprentice who was currently studying in that department.

The students were then given goody bags to bring away with them and they thoroughly enjoyed their taster day.
