Badminton Success

Pupils from Thorp Academy and Ryton Badminton Club put in a fantastic performance at the Tees Valley Junior Badminton Tournament at the weekend.

9 players from the club (7 from Thorp) made the journey to Thornaby Pavillion to play in the purpose build sports hall funded by Badminton England.

The competition feature club and county players from the area with some age groups featuring a "novice" category for those who haven't played much competitive badminton.

U15 Boys Doubles Winners Daniel Armstrong and Billy Lapworth.

Billy and Daniel scraped through to the final as runners up in the group stage and had to play one of Yorkshire County's top juniors in the final. They had been beaten by the yorkshire pair in the group stage but used their heads in the final as one opponent was significantly weaker than the Yorkshire player who had taken Louie Abraham in the singles. Armstrong and Lapworth used tactical placement and ensured they controlled the game. The lads beat their opponents in 2 ends meaning both their names get engraved on the U15 trophy once more.

U15 Girls doubles

Jude Lapworth dominated the U15 Girls Doubles competition with her fellow Durham County partner Pheobe Caffery from Hartlepool Badminton Club. The girls had no problems getting to the final and walking away with the trophy despite playing 2 years above their age group.

U15 Novice boys

Josh Cockbain and Thomas Stewart made it an all Thorp final in the U15 Novice Boys Singles category. Stewart had the edge in the group stage, beating Cockbain to give him a shot at the title. However, Cockbain reached the final and put in a determined performance to take the trophy.
