Students at Thorp Academy celebrate GCSE success

Students at Thorp Academy which is one of ten secondary academies sponsored by the Northern Education Trust (NET), have secured some of the best results ever at GCSE this year.

The academy achieved an incredible number of good passes this year in English and Maths as the new marking system for awarding grades in these two subjects was used for the first time. A staggering 60% of students overall achieved a standard pass in English and Maths.

There were once again some outstanding individual successes. Anna Heath achieved 9's in English and Maths, Three A*'s and Four A's. Rory Atkinson achieved an 8 in his English, 9 in his Maths, five A*'s and 2 A's. Laura Westgarth achieved an 8 in her English and Maths, 5 A*'s, one A and one B. Nathan Fenwick achieved an 8 in English, 9 in Maths, one A*, five A's and one B. Adam Sanderson achieved an 8 in English, 8 in Maths, one A*, five A's and one B.

Commenting on this year's results, Andrew Jordon, Executive Principal, wished to thank his teaching staff and students for the dedication and commitment they have shown. He said:

"The continuing success of Thorp is very pleasing. This is a good set of results for us. Our aim is to ensure that every child fulfils their potential and is fully equipped to proceed confidently to the next stage in their life. Many students will be progressing to the Sixth Form at Thorp Academy and build on the fantastic results our sixth form students achieved last week. I am certain we are on track to achieve year on year improvement. Next year we will do even better."

Ian Kershaw, chief executive of Northern Education Trust, added his praise: "These results reflect a huge amount of hard work and Thorp academy is to be congratulated. What is especially pleasing this year is that this success has been seen in almost all of our other secondary academies."
