National title for George

THORP ACADEMY windsurfer George Stewart is the national junior champion.

THORP ACADEMY windsurfer George Stewart is the national junior champion.

George, who is a member of the Kielder Kestrels, made a splash at Grafham Water, Cambridgeshire, and ended up celebrating the top honour.

He had to qualify for the nationals by competing over four 'inter-club' events and the Kestrels came second in their series.

The winners and runners up then got to attend a national event to compete for the T15 Champions Cup, where there are various fleets of windsurfers depending on sail size. George competed in the 4.5 fleet of six.

Each sailor competes in their own right and points added together to get the overall team result. There were seven races overall and five counted.

George finished first in four and claimed second in another to earn him the title of Techno 4.5 RYA National Junior Windsurfing Champion.

He managed that despite inconsistent conditions. On the Saturday there was only one race because of lightning.

On the Sunday the lift winds favoured George and he achieved his best results in the morning. Rising winds during the day brought the event to a close on Sunday afternoon.

George said: “I am very proud to be crowned 4.5 fleet national champion. I really enjoyed the sailing and working together as a team. I am very pleased to have achieved one of my goals.”

Fellow Thorp student Jonathan Dodd, in Year 11, also competed in the competitive 6.8 fleet and he finished in a credible mid fleet.
