Impressive end for badminton boys

SIX students from Thorp Academy brought the Northumberland Badminton League season to a close in style for the Ryton Men's team.

SIX students from Thorp Academy brought the Northumberland Badminton League season to a close in style for the Ryton Men?s team.

Peter Elder, Louie Abraham, Jack Newbrook, Billy Lapworth and Daniel Armstrong all played their part in a victory at Walbottle Campus, where they hoped to shine in the absence of school friend James Carr.

Carr was resting a sprained ankle and the others had to step up and make amends for a 9-0 defeat to the same team at the start of the campaign.

This time around it was much tighter and after six games the score was level.

Elder and his partner, a senior, went on for their final games and were taken to three ends before winning the final end comfortably. They remained unbeaten all night.

Abraham and Newbrook had a nailbiting three-ender but ended up victorious to ensure Ryton had a 5-4 win at least ? dropping only one game and they played outstanding badminton all night.

Then Lapworth and Armstrong capped things off. They had another three end contest which in the final minutes stood at 21-20.

The hall was silent for the final rally and Billy tried a drop that ended up hitting the net and trickling over to win the game 22-20.

It was a memorable victory and a fantastic way to bring the curtain down on the season.
