BADMINTON talents from Thorp Academy shone at club level to deliver impressive results during the Tees Valley Tournament last weekend.

Seven students from Thorp made up the nine-strong Ryton Badminton Club team at the Thornaby Pavillion and there was plenty to celebrate.

The competition saw club and county players battle it out. This is how Thorp’s representatives got on.

Charlie Colbeck found success in the Under-13 Novice Category because he never dropped a game all day.

Colbeck then joined forces with Josh Cockbain to win the Under-15s Novice Boys’ doubles, even though Charlie competed two years above his own age.

In the Under-15s Boys Doubles there was success for Daniel Armstrong and Billy Lapworth. The duo scraped through to the final as runners-up in the group stage and had to play one of Yorkshire County's top junior’s in the final.

They had been beaten by the Yorkshire pair in the group but used tactical placement to ensure they controlled the game. The boys beat their opponents in two ends.

Louie Abraham reached the Under-15s Boys Singles final but was unable to get into his stride against the dominant Yorkshire county player.

Louie had to pull out of the doubles as he was worried about a knee injury. He still managed to get through the group and into the final for the singles. He lost in two ends but was still able to make it a good game for spectators.

Jude Lapworth dominated the Under-15s Girls’ Doubles with her fellow Durham County partner Phoebe Caffery from Hartlepool Badminton Club. The girls had no problems getting to the final and won despite playing two years above their age group.

Cockbain and Thomas Stewart made it an all Thorp final in the Under-15s Novice Boys’ Singles.

Stewart had the edge in the group stage, beating Cockbain to give him a shot at the title. However, Cockbain reached the final and put in a determined performance to take the trophy.
