EIGHT Thorp Academy footballers celebrated cup glory on Friday – in style.

The Thorp boys, three of which are enrolled on the Elite Performer Programme, stunned the unbeaten league leaders to win the NEYDL Under-13s final for Ryton & Crawcrook Albion.

Goalkeeper and man of the match Owen Miller was joined by Charlie Taylor, Ryan Waugh, Matthew Lillie, Matty Connelly, Toby Marchegiani, Tyler Eggleton and Thomas Carr in the Ryton ranks.

The victory was made all the more impressive because it was against City Juniors, who are top of the Premiership (top tier) and had not lost a single game in any competition this season.

Ryton are the division below and also had to overcome the second place team in the Premiership in the semi-final.

Coach Malcolm Connelly said: “The group of lads I coach are an outstanding group, with no shortage of ability. They have a great attitude, determination and sportsmanship.

“They are a real credit to everyone who has anything to do with them, including Thorp Academy. They have improved and developed year on year to achieve the success they did on Friday and I couldn't be prouder of them.”
