Girls ready for nationals qualifier in pool

FOUR swimmers from Thorp Academy will aim for national recognition when they compete in a qualifier for the 60th ESSA Secondary Schools' Team Championships on Thursday.

Year 9 duo Emma Eddy and Erin Temple along with Year 10 pair Sarah March and Charlotte Grant will be teaming up to represent Ryton?s Thorp at Durham?s Freemans Quay.

The quartet will form two team relay teams in the freestyle and medley and are looking to impress from a tough field by qualifying for the Nationals on November 18 at the former Olympic pool in London.

Emma, Erin, Sarah and Charlotte are all part of Thorp?s Elite Performer Programme and have started working again with double Olympic medalist Nick Gillingham.

Nick, who began working with Thorp?s elite swimmers in January, is satisfied with the progress made so far and expects their development to continue.

Nick said: "The girls at Thorp Academy continue to progress through the skills of starts, turns, finishes and underwaters.

?It was good to establish the coach swimmer relationship last season and trust, faith and belief has progressed into this season with the all girls really enjoying their swimming.

?I always try to make my coaching sessions interesting as well as fun and educational. Using the time I have effectively in order to support their home club programmes is so important.

?The ESSA Championship Final takes place at the London Aquatic Centre and it would be a huge achievement to qualify this week in Durham. I remain both hopeful and optimistic"
