Collaborative Learning

Collaboration in the classroom has the potential to elevate the learning of students past the superficial and into the deeper learning that remains for a lifetime. It is all about engagement. By adopting a collaborative learning approach in lessons students at Thorp Academy are able to demonstrate high levels of engagement.

What is the impact of collaborative learning?

Research shows that educational experiences that are active, social, contextual, engaging, and student-owned lead to deeper learning. The benefits of collaborative learning include:

  • Development of higher-level thinking, oral communication, self-management, and leadership skills.
  • Increase in student retention, self-esteem, and responsibility.
  • Exposure to and an increase in understanding of diverse perspectives.
  • Preparation for real life social and employment situations.

This method of teaching develops pupils' social skills; interaction with other pupils, turn taking, listening to the views of others and the ability to share information PIES:

  • Positive interdependence
  • Individual accountability
  • Equal participation
  • Simultaneous interaction

Structures are introduced to staff and students weekly through short bursts of CPD throughout the year.

As each routine and structure is introduced there are accompanying assemblies where students are introduced to routine / structure. Routines and structures are reinforced by departments and Senior Leadership Team as they circulate the academy daily.

Our classroom are learning centred where student experiance is; active, social, contextual and student owned with a high level of student engagement to deepen learning. Collaborative learning uses strucutred approches with well designed tasks, this promotes higher-order thinking skills which research shows leads to the greatest learning and progress. The result for our students is an xperiance which is challenging and fun having a positive impact on their learning and overall progress.

The collaborative structures used are explained in the document below:

A guide to collaborative learning at Thorp Academy

What our students think:-

Kaylee Jo Kendal

My first year at Thorp has been filled with collaborative learning which I enjoy because you can share ideas and help each other learn.

Esmay Wright

Collaborative learning is a huge part of Thorp that has had an impact on my learning and probably many other students too, as more ideas and observations of a topic are shared and explained.

Ashleigh Britten

My first year at Thorp has been great fun! I have really enjoyed the collaborative learning in lessons as it gives you a chance to share ideas from your work and make friends along the way.

Courtney Manning

In lessons we do collaborative learning which is where you can share ideas to help you learn and build your knowledge. Collaborative learning is fun because you get to talk to other members in your class that you may not usually talk to. Teachers are really supportive and help coach you to get answers in lessons and help you learn further.

Tobias Dawson

Collaborative learning at Thorp really helps because lots of students have different ideas and knowledge therefore when you place it all together, everyone comes out knowing more than they did in the beginning!
