Together We Achieve

PE and Performance

Faculty vision statement and ethos

Together we aim to provide an inspirational and enjoyable learning environment for all students so they can nurture their skills, qualities passion for Physical Education, Sport and Performing Arts becoming the best they can be!

Opportunities to excel, participate and develop a passion for learning underpin everything we do. All students in will have the opportunity to participate and thrive in a wide range of activities that extend beyond the confines of the classroom and day to day teaching aiming to develop their passion, performance and enthusiasm for participation and our community.

Equally as important, we will also help students to build character and self-confidence while embedding values such as fairness and respect for others using participation in sports and performance as the vehicle.

Expectations and the journey to success

In year 7 to 11 the teaching pedagogy of planning backwards is used following the AQA GCSE PE based syllabus.

In years 7 and 8 the aim is to cover the 'basic' skills needed to perform within a sporting activity and as and when the individual is capable, progress to more complicated aspects of the activity. The rules, tactics and strategies of an activity are continually introduced when appropriate to enable all students to gain a clear understanding of the concepts that govern each activity covered.

Learning is facilitated by using a spiral approach to planning. Students are given regular opportunities to either consolidate or extend their learning ensuring that progress is always made within an activity.

Ability streaming of groups is also employed and is structured in 3 strands. These are Performance, Academy and Development. These groups are set out to facilitate and develop the pupils' skills and application and be a constant feature of the lesson.

Across Years 9, 10 and 11 each student experiences an activity by looking at it in more depth and application of the core skill set that is associated with each activity. Here learning opportunities are extended so that a students can develop their competency in for instance full sided games, individual based performances, individual and or team analysis and an increased emphasis for opportunities for coaching and leadership.

Specifically, in year 11 all students will follow an option based programme around a number of sports. This will allow students more time to fully focus specific activities and work towards the highest performance possible especially if they have chosen GCSE PE a qualification.

In this phase of learning students will consider a greater analysis of how tactics, strategy, and psychological issues can impact and improve performance whilst having further opportunities to review the key concepts and skills associated with each activity covered. Pupils are constantly encouraged to demonstrate increasingly refined techniques in activities across our programmes of study.

Finally, all our students have opportunities to develop their leadership skill via the Sports Leadership programme we have at Thorp Academy. This allows students to take an active role working local primary feeder school, clubs and National sports initiative.

In years 12 and 13 we provide learning programmes that cover both the academic and high end sporting performance in both A Level and BTEC. Both courses allow for perfect transition to all sports related University courses

Level 3 Sports Leaders course is also an option for students who wish to follow an nationally recognised Sports Leadership qualification as an enrichment option.
