Thorp Academy Site
Now the new building here at Thorp is open it completes the rebuilding phase of the development programme. The academy has a new main hall that can accommodate up to 300 persons for assemblies and performances. Backing on to this hall is a new purpose built drama studio with its own curtains and lighting set up, making it a great space for rehearsals.
The new building also houses the academy sixth form who now have their own common room, silent study room and their own dedicated ICT suite. On the ground floor is the academy library that houses a vast selection reading materials, and space for studying, reading or teaching a full class in the classroom area. These rooms complement the 27 new classrooms for the Faculties of English, Humanities and Languages who have at their disposal 4 new ICT Suites.
The STEM building that opened in November 2015 houses 31 classrooms for Maths, Science and Technology. This includes 11 fully equipped science laboratories, 2 dedicated cookery rooms, 2 specialist technology workshops, and 2 ICT suites.
Then west block houses the Faculties of Art which includes Media, and Health and Social Care, alongside the Music departments' two rooms, one a functional classroom space combining numerous practice and breakout rooms and its very own recording studio and one room which is used as a permanent practice rooms for various instruments and our own steel pans.
The academy also boasts excellent sporting facilities with 2 large sports halls, extensive fields and its own strength and conditioning gym. These facilities are used widely within the academy which has recently launched an Elite Performance Programme for young sports stars of the future. The facilities are also made available for hire and are used extensively out of schools hours by local sports and community groups.
In all classrooms in the Academy the tables are arranged in collaborative groupings of four in order to support the principals of collaborative learning.
